Favorite Line or Lyric:
Like a treasure that travels with me down every road
There’s this longing lonesome ending kind of bitter, kind of sweet
There’s a hole in my heart in the shape of you
Song: The Shape of You
Genre: Folk, Singer/Songwriter, Country
Why I picked this Song: For those of you following my Homer to Homer, Alaskan Odyssey, you are aware that the last post was my arrival in Homer. In Homer, I left, some, of my dad’s ashes for the first time. I knew, Tuesday’s Tune would have to connect with such a significant event.
For that reason, I looked to Homer’s #1 Export. Which it turns out is Halibut. So, I got more specific and looked no further than, Homer’s #1 Musical Export, Jewel. Her song, The Shape of You, captures loss, grieving and the attempt to heal, in a unique way. I am quick to cry when I hear an emotional song. I like The Shape of You, because if makes me smile more than cry; which can be very refreshing. Plus, Jewel captured my feelings way better than the post that I wrote. But I did create a fun motorcycle video, so if you haven’t see it, you should check it out.
I am glad to be able to share this song with you. Especially, if you have never heard it. It is dedicated to everyone who has ever struggled with the loss of a loved one. But, I want to specifically dedicate it to my sister, Tami, and my dad’s wife, Helena.
The song requires no additional introduction. Simply, scroll down to watch the video, and hear Jewel perform it live. If you prefer, for your convenience, I have added music links to Amazon & iTunes.
On this album, Jewel went back to her roots. Many of the songs are reported to have been written when she was younger. The album includes some great collaborations. My favorite is the song, “My Father’s Daughter” with special guest, Dolly Parton.
The album was recorded live in multiple locations, with no studio trickery or overdubs. This gives the album a similar audio sound to her first album, Pieces of You. However, the lyrical content shows an artist in a much different place. Matured, but still fully aware of her roots.
