We’re going to party
Karamu, fiesta, forever
Come on and sing along!
Overview: In the 80’s there was a service called Columbia Music club. You would get a bunch of free tapes or records (vinyl) in the mail for a penny. Then over the course of time, you were required to buy a certain amount to fulfill your obligation. As a kid, I subscribed and resubscribed multiple times.
When High School came, I knew I had to buy more than just Kiss albums, if I was going to have girls over. The obvious choices, were Wham, Duran Duran, and of course Lionel Richie. I still have my vinyl copy of Can’t Slow Down.
Jump ahead 34 years! The lovely Mahshid Mazooji, who I met when she was only 12, used Lionel Richie’s hit song, All Night Long, to make the best of an airport delay. She created a music video, with strangers, airport employees, and a Starbucks Barista.
As of this writing, it has over 1 million views, in under 5 days! Many media outlets are reaching out to her – Lionel Richie himself, even shared her video. It is a great example of what you can do if you decide not to let your anger get the better of you. I am in awe of Mahshid’s beautiful spirit.
I have included the original 80’s video, as well as Mahshid’s below.
Artist: Lionel Richie
Song: All Night Long
Lyrically the song sticks to the point. There is a party and it is going to last all night long. I chose my favorite line above, because it includes the word, Karma. I am sure, everyone mis-sang this lyrics for ever; I know I did. No one knew what it meant. We didn’t have Google back then. I can now share that it is Swahili for a party accompanied by a feast – of course, it is!
1) A young Richard Marx, before he was famous supplied backing vocals on many Lionel Richie Recording, including this track.
2) Lionel Richie’s wife had a Jamaican gynecologist. In order to ensure that he was pronouncing the Caribbean words that he uses on this song correctly, Richie called the gynecologist, who replied, “I’m right in the middle of an appointment, can we talk later?”
3) Richie performed this song at the closing ceremony of the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Among the dancers was a young Cuba Gooding Jr., making his first appearance as an entertainer
